Meeting of the Polish-Danish-Cypriot trio

On 20 May 2009 a seminar dedicated to the preparations for the presidency trio Poland-Denmark-Cyprus took place at the Office of the Committee for European Integration in Warsaw.

The meeting was attended by Mr Kim Jorgensen – Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Mr Andreas Moleskis – Coordinator of Cyprus preparations for the EU presidency in 2012, and Mr Mikołaj Dowgielewicz - the Government Plenipotentiary for the Polish preparations for the presidency in 2011.

The speakers appreciated the pleasant atmosphere during the meeting and pointed out that the biggest problem for the Member States, which are to hold the presidency, will be to overcome the economical and financial crisis. The priority of the trio will be to achieve a compromise on regulations of the new financial perspective for the whole Union. The participants assured that in the near future such meetings will be continued.

On 1 July 2011 Poland will assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union and it will chair its  works for 6 months as the first Member State from the Polish-Danish-Cypriot trio. Holding the presidency of the EU is the natural consequence of the accession of Poland to the EU in 2004 and an obligation resulting from the status of Member State.

The contacts between the Polish-Danish-Cypriot trio, at the level of Ministers responsible for preparations for the presidency, were initiated in February 2008 during the meeting in Copenhagen. Another round of talks was hold in Warsaw in May 2008 and in November 2008 in Nicosia. The Cypriot party declared in Nicosia their willingness to organise a meeting at the Foreign Ministers level in April or May 2009.
